You are a Miracle

Confirmation, February 3, 2021

Somewhere around fourteen years ago a miracle happened: you were born!  Through the love of your parents and the grace of God, you were born into this world and you were given the gift of LIFE.  That was a miracle. Did you ever think of yourself as a miracle?  Well, you are.

Shortly after that another miracle occurred: you were baptized, and at the baptism you received the gift of eternal life. So from the time of that Baptism, you automatically received the gift of eternal life. That is the second and most important miracle. So if anything were to happen to you now, you will automatically go to heaven. The only way you could not go to heaven is if you were to commit severe mortal sin, which I doubt any of you have.

And so these two miracles, the gift of Life and the gift of Eternal Life were both given you in the first months of life, and you didn’t even know what was happening. These gifts were given to you by a loving God, and by four people who spoke for you--your parents and your God parents.

A priest asked you…"Do you reject Satan?" Your parents and God-parents spoke for you: “He does or she does”.

"And all his works?" …again…parents and godparents: “He does or she does.”

"And all his empty promises?": “He does or she does.”

Then the priest continued…."Do you believe in God, the Father almighty?" Your parents and God parents continued as well: ”He does or she does.”

The priest: "Do you believe in Jesus Christ?" Parents and Godparents: “Yes, Yes, O yes”

"Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?":  “Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes!”

Do you still believe in all of these things?  That’s what confirmation is all about.

Confirmation is YOU confirming what your parents and Godparents spoke about you at your Baptism.  They said it then, you’re saying it now.

Then the priest poured water on your forehead and you were baptized, and original sin and all sin was washed away and you received the gift of eternal life.

Then you were anointed with the oil of Chrism. And you will be anointed with it again in a few moments. Chrism is the most sacred of the three oils in the Church. It is used at Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.

Then you were clothed with a white garment similar to this one and the priest said, “You have become a new creation and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With Family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of Heaven."

How is that white garment doing? Is it still unstained? Or did it get dirty along the way?

Then the priests presented your parents and godparents with the lit Baptismal candle, lit from the burning Easter candle and said: "Parents and god parents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning.  This child of yours has been Enlighted by Christ.  He or she is to walk always as a child of the light. May he or she keep the flame of faith alive in his or her heart.  When the Lord comes may he or she go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom."  How is that flame of faith doing? Is it still burning brightly, or did someone or something come along and blow it out?

All this was done, and spoken, and prayed over you when you were an infant by people who loved you with all their hearts and still do.

And that is what we are doing here today. We are confirming your Baptism!

ONLY now you are doing it yourself. You are speaking your Baptismal vows instead of you parents and godparents.

You are putting on the white baptismal cloth instead of your parents or godparents. YOU are lighting the baptismal candle instead of you parents and godparents, now you are making your response to God instead of someone else doing it for you.

And there you have it. Fourteen or so years ago you received two miracles, the miracle of life here on earth when you were born, and then the miracle of eternal life when you were baptized.  And tonight you are confirming those miracles. You are expressing those beliefs yourself, rather than having someone else do it for you.

You are saying: "I reject Satan, and all his works, and all his empty promises."  Always remember his promises are all lies, always.

You are saying: "I believe in God, I believe in Jesus, I believe in the Holy Spirit I believe in the Holy Catholic Church, I believe in eternal life because I choose to, I want to."

Congratulations! Good choices.

In conclusion, always live as a child of God. Be the good person that God made you to be. Never be the Satan that you reject. Never hurt anyone physically or emotionally. Never be selfish, never lie, cheat, or steal. Be yourself, never pretend to be someone you’re not. Never make fun of anyone else, especially someone less fortunate.  Never ever bully, I repeat, never ever bully anyone. Do you know how that feels?

Be the miracle that God made you to be. Amen. Be the miracle that you are!

Amen. Amen. AMEN!
