Diocese of Youngstown

Pastoral Planning Process

The plan reorganizes the Diocese into 15 Pastoral Regions to address the declining number of priests in active ministry, declining Catholic population, and decreasing numbers of active parishioners. Regions were determined based on Mass attendance counts, geography, and church capacities.  The plan includes both pastoral and administrative collaborations among parishes. For example, each priest would celebrate no more than 3 Masses per weekend.

St. Michael is in Region 13-Mahoning West along with St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary (Austintown); Our Lady

of the Lakes (Lake Milton/ North Jackson); St. Mary/St. Joseph (Newton Falls).  This encompasses 6 worship sites and 5 parishes, downsizing the number of priests from 4 to 3; weekend Masses from 13 to 9.

Please send any suggestions to Fr. Terry, in writing or by email (tjh@stmichaelcanfield.org),

or to any member of Parish Council.

The information below was distributed at all of our Masses on July 6 and 7:

Notes to consider:

So far, St. Michael is the only parish in the "Mahoning West Region" to be untouched in the region. (One Pastor)

Immaculate Heart of Mary in Austintown is a stand-alone parish and has a parish leader to run the parish, and a Canonical pastor who is also the pastor of St. Joseph Austintown.

(By Canon Law, every parish must have a pastor and the pastor must be a priest. Hence a Canonical Pastor is a Pastor by Canon law, but the parish leader is supposed to run the parish.)

St. Joseph Parish in Austintown is a stand-alone parish but its Pastor is also Canonical Pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary.

St Catherine in Lake Milton and St. James in North Jackson have already been combined into one parish named "Our Lady of the Lakes". (One Pastor)

St. Mary Parish and St. Joseph Parish both in Newton Falls have already been combined into one parish named "St. Mary/St. Joseph". (One Pastor)

In the Mahoning West Region we currently have 4 priests, but that will soon be reduced to 3. We currently have a total of 13 Masses but will soon be reduced to 9. By Canon Law a priest cannot be scheduled to say more than 3 Masses per weekend including the Saturday Vigil Mass. Masses: St. Michael - 3; St Joseph -2; IM -3; St. Mary/St. Joseph—3; Our Lady of the Lakes—2.

Our Parish Council will continue to discuss possible solutions as will regional meetings to be called by the Deans.
