Pastoral Council Discernment Process Now Underway
NEW PASTORAL COUNCIL TO BE ESTABLISHED
The creation of a parish pastoral council is defined in the Code of Canon Law: Can. 536.
§1. After the diocesan bishop has listened to the presbyteral council and if he judges it opportune,
a pastoral council is to be established in each parish; the pastor presides over it, and through it
the Christian faithful along with those who share in the pastoral care of the parish in virtue of their office (staff) give their help in fostering pastoral activity.
§2. This pastoral council possesses a consultative role only and is governed by norms determined by the diocesan bishop.
We are in the process of establishing a new pastoral council for Saint Michael Parish.
For the new pastoral council beginning in January of 2022, nine people will be discerned (3 for a 3 year term, ending in December of 2024; 3 for a 2 year term ending in December of 2023, and 3 for a 1 year term ending in December of 2022.
Any active parishioner post high school age who is in a valid state of life with regard to the Church (Confirmed, in a valid marriage if married, etc.) may be nominated. Once on council, each member is to take an active role in one of the four committees: Faith Formation, Spiritual & Liturgical; Social Concerns; Parish & Family Life (aside from Stewardship, of which the finance council chairperson is the pastoral council representative from the established finance council).
They should come to this process void of any agenda, but filled commitment to building up the parish community. The chairperson of the pastoral council will lead the discernment process with the five committee chairpersons reaching a majority consensus on membership. In addition, a youth representative will be appointed by the pastor, to serve no more than three years, and no longer than the September following their high school graduation. Pastoral Council will meet in odd numbered months, with time during the even numbered months for committee meetings and or discussions.
If you are interested, or would like to nominate another member of the parish, please email the parish office at info@stmichaelcanfield.org. Thank you for your interest in moving our parish forward.
