St. Michael Parish is a Roman Catholic Community of diverse individuals united in faith in Jesus Christ. Called to the mission of Jesus by Baptism, nourished by Word and Sacrament, we join together to celebrate our faith, to share in each other's journey and to minister to one another both in joy and in sorrow. As members of Christ's Body, we all strive to live the fullness of the Gospel message. We believe that we are called to be "Christ to Others." Therefore, we continually strive to grow stronger and more knowledgeable in faith and to share our "gifts from God": time, talent, treasure and faith with our community and the world.

Dear Parishioners,

One of our many wonderful ministries that we offer at St. Michael is that of preparing and serving a Mercy Luncheon after funerals.  This luncheon is free for the family and friends of the deceased.  This luncheon is a great relief to mourners because they do not have to look for another place to have it.  However, we are in need of more volunteers to help put this on.  If you are free during the day, and would be willing to help us out, please call the office.  Make it a good week everyone!

Sincerely,

Fr. Terry

APPALACHIA 2008

Our 2008 stock sale is now in progress.  Stock is $10 per share, and we ask that you continue to share what you can with those who desperately need your help. We support this mission solely through the sale of stock and donations.  Our trip to Grahn , Kentucky will take place the week of July 13th.

Are you interested in becoming Catholic?

It is not too soon to begin your inquiry!  Please contact Barb Spencer through the parish office for more information about the RCIA process - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.  A new group forms as soon as there is a new group of inquirers.  RCIA is also for those baptized Catholic, but for some reason never completed their Confirmation or First Communion, or were not raised in the Catholic faith, despite being baptized Catholic.  A new group needs to begin by early September, at the latest, in preparation for Easter 2009.

     FIRST COMMUNION DVD'S

First Communion DVD's should be available soon.  It is not too late to order one.  If you have not done so yet, please call the parish office.  Families will be notified when the orders arrive.

With Heartfelt Thanks!

Thank you to our GOF families who turned in an evaluation form.  We have received 61 evaluations.  Your comments are very important to us as we work to plan next year.  If you have not filled out a form and would like to do so, they are available at the parish office.  We also included a preliminary volunteer sheet in the evaluation.  Our goal is to develop an implementation team this upcoming season that will enhance our family experience.  We also hope to work on a vibrant music ministry for GOF, and as always, we will be looking for new catechists.  So, if you have an interest in planning, singing or teaching for next season's GOF, please contact Vicki at the parish office as soon as possible.

MILITARY SUPPORT MINISTRY

At the recommendation of Parish Council, our parish has begun a new ministry aimed at supporting our young men and women serving our country in the military, at home and abroad.  We are beginning by writing letters of support to any member of the military of whom we are aware.  If you know someone in the military, please call the parish office at 330-533-6839, or mail us, and we will put them on our list.  The committee members will be writing them on a regular basis in order to offer our thanks and show our support.  If you are interested in serving on the committee, please call the parish office.

FIRST FRIDAY CLUB

The next luncheon in the series will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008, from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM.  St. Michael's has a reserved table.  Cost is $15/person and includes lunch.  The speaker will be Fr. Thomas W. Tifft, Rector at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology, Diocese of Cleveland.  Our topic will be "Popes of the Twentieth Century".  Call the parish office to make a reservation at our table.  It will be held at Antone's Banquet Centre.

Parish Nursery Help:  We currently are recruiting new volunteers for our Sunday morning nursery program held in the Ark.  Volunteers typically are scheduled only once a month, either during the 9:00 AM or the 11:00 AM Mass.  This is a wonderful service we can provide only through the generosity of our volunteers.  If you are interested, please contact Vicki Vicars at the parish office.  Thank you to those who have been faithfully serving over the last several years; we appreciate your commitment!

ALTAR SERVERS AND EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS ARE NEEDED FOR 4:30 PM MASS

We are still in need of altar servers and Eucharistic Ministers at this mass.   Would you be interested in one of these ministries?  If you are currently involved with one of these ministries at another mass, would you be available on occasion for the 4:30 PM mass?  Please call the parish office.

Children in fourth grade and up can be altar servers and anyone who has been confirmed and is 16 years of age or older can be Eucharistic Ministers.

RETURNING TO ST MICHAEL IN THE FALL

CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH (CRHP)

MEN'S AND WOMEN’S RENEWAL WEEKENDS!

It is not too early to reserve your spot for the return of CRHP weekend to St. Michael’s this October 18-19 (men’s renewal weekend) and October 25-26 (women’s renewal weekend).  Reservations will be limited and priority will be given to our own parishioners first.

WHAT IS CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH (CRHP)?

CRHP is a Catholic Parish Renewal program that began in 1968 in the Cleveland Diocese.  It has gone national/international.  The Youngstown Diocese has been a strong participant in this program.  The weekend is designed to bring adult members of the parish closer together in Christ as well as strengthen a person’s spirituality and faith life.  The weekend is put on by a team of your peers who have made the weekend themselves along with the help of a parish staff member(s) who serve as Spiritual Director(s).   The weekend is a gift from the parish at no cost to you.  Contact: PARISH OFFICE (330-533-6839)

Our current parish hall is available for rental to parishioners during the months from June through August.  It could be used for graduation parties, showers, anniversary parties, small weddings, etc.  At this point in time, we will rent you the hall only; you will have to bring your own caterer.  This will probably change in the future when the Family Life Center is built.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOUP KITCHEN

For the first time in a few years, we are short of hands to do the work on Saturdays at the St. Vincent De Paul Dining Hall. We, the parishioners of St. Michael, have been the inception and the continuation of this ministry during the last 25 years. If you and/or your family would like to be a volunteer for this ministry – it would mean a 2-1/2 hour commitment every other month (6 times a year), please call Juanita Sherba at 330-793-3606 for more information.

If you would like to help the Soup Kitchen but do not have time to volunteer, please consider a monetary donation. As part of our Saturday responsibility, we must pay our security officer. This amounts to $30 per week. Tithing to this ministry is a way of helping your immediate community and your fellow parishioners serve in this area. Simply put an envelope with whatever you would like to contribute in the collection basket on Sunday and mark it St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen. This money will go directly to the Saturday group.

Please prayerfully consider these invitations to make a difference in the life of someone in need in your community.

Charities - FYI:     Many times our parishioners have asked me about different charities that ask them for donations.  People wonder how legitimate they are.  My advice is always the same: only give to charities that you KNOW are legitimate.  Some good examples are: St. Michael Parish (of course), Catholic Charities, St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, and Food for the Poor.  There are, of course, many others, but with these I personally know that your money goes where it is intended.  Many people tend to forget that their local parish is a charity in need of donations too.      ----Fr. Terry

RETROUVAILLE (Help for Troubled Marriages)

Do you feel like you are in a hopeless marriage?  Retrouvaille (pronounced “re-tro-vi” meaning “rediscovery”) can help you two put the pieces back together in your marriage.  The 2008 weekend programs in the Youngstown Diocese are scheduled for May 2-4 and Oct. 24-26.  For more info on our local program call 800-470-2230 or visit www.retrouvaille.org.

Do you like to sing or play an instrument??

Can you carry a tune?  Will your voice blend with a group?  If so, please consider joining our choir.  We practice on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9 PM in the church and we sing at the 9 AM Mass on Sundays.  We also have a lot of fun.  All ages are welcome.  Can we count on you?

Our resident instrumental ensemble, the Brass of Saint Michael, invites musicians from seventh grade to adults to join us.  In spite of our name, the group now includes non-brass instruments as well as brass.  If you are interested please leave your name and phone number at the parish office.  We hope to hear from you soon!!
